21 Ideas for Movies to Watch for Date Night

You and your partner are snuggled on the couch, popcorn in hand, ready to discover your new favorite movie but don’t know where to start? Hopefully, my list gives you the perfect inspo for where to look! Whether you’re in the mood for a cozy comfort classic or an art house/indie/A24 vibe, the right movie sets the tone for an unforgettable date night. As a wedding videographer inspired by the art of storytelling, I’ve curated a list of films that combine romance, humor, drama, and visual artistry — because love is complex, and so are the best movies (and let’s be real, so is agreeing on what to watch). Let’s go!

1. We Live In Time (Romantic Drama)

This recent release is a beautiful love story that explores the passage of time and the decisions we make for ourselves and the people we love. With a poignant, nonlinear narrative and stunning cinematography, it’s a deeply emotional experience. Perfect for a quiet night when you’re both in the mood to reflect on love’s fleeting moments.

2. RRR (Action, Drama, Musical)

This Indian blockbuster delivers everything — high-octane action, jaw-dropping visuals, and a bromance so intense you'll question yourself a little. Bonus: The musical numbers are chef’s kiss iconic. I had no idea I love bollywood this much. It’s a wild ride that I can only describe as ridiculously fun to watch together.

3. The Holdovers (Comedy, Drama)

A heartfelt dramedy about unlikely friendships and second chances. Set during the holiday season, this film will have you laughing, tearing up, and feeling all the cozy nostalgic vibes. Ideal for a wintery date night with hot cocoa.

4. Loving Vincent (Animated Biographical Drama)

Every frame of this film is a hand-painted masterpiece inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s art. It’s visually stunning and emotionally captivating, making it a perfect pick for art history buffs who appreciate storytelling in its most beautiful form. PS There is a documentary on how this film was made that I personally find inspiring. PPS It has Saoirse Ronan so it's kind of obligatory that you watch it.

5. Daniel (Drama Documentary)

A thoughtful and gripping real life tale of resilience and hope, this film dives deep into the human spirit. It’s not a light watch, but it’s perfect for couples who love profound, meaningful cinema. It was the first film I watched in 2024 and drastically changed my outlook on how I live and document my life.

6. Past Lives (Romantic Drama)

A soul-stirring story about "what could have been" love story. This film is quiet yet powerful, with a narrative that lingers in your mind long after it ends. Perfect for those late-night existential chats.

7. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (Adventure, Comedy, Drama)

A quirky, heartfelt gem from director Taika Waititi. This story of an unlikely duo on the run through the New Zealand bush will have you laughing and crying in equal measure. A delightful watch for a lighthearted yet touching evening.

Twists, turns, and tension. This slick thriller keeps you guessing until the very end. If you and your partner are fans of clever, suspenseful stories, I think Sharper is super underrated. Personally it had me glued to the screen.

9. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Romantic Sci-Fi)

A modern classic about love and memory. Its inventive storytelling and emotional depth make it a thought-provoking choice. Perfect for couples who appreciate films that are as smart as they are emotional. Side note: I enjoyed this one a lot more the second time around. I can see why it is so beloved.

Jane Austen’s timeless tale gets a modern twist in this charming adaptation. With beautiful costumes and sharp wit, it’s perfect for fans of period dramas and classic love stories.

A tender, nostalgic love story about an Irish immigrant in 1950s New York. It’s a visually stunning, emotionally rich film that captures the struggles and joys of finding home and love. An elegant, unconventional love story about obsession and creativity. It’s visually sumptuous and deeply engaging, with Daniel Day-Lewis delivering a stellar performance. Great for fans of high drama and all the couture fashion.

14. The Big Sick (Romantic Comedy)

Based on a true story, this film is as hilarious as it is heartwarming. It’s relatable, witty, and full of heart — a perfect choice for a feel-good movie night. My partner isn't normally a rom com fan, but this one sucked him in.

15. Rye Lane (Romantic Comedy)

A fresh, vibrant rom-com that follows two strangers over the course of one transformative day in London. It’s funny, charming, and visually incredible. A must-watch for fans of love stories with a twist.

A visually striking thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. With its retro aesthetic and intriguing plot and cast, it’s a captivating watch for fans of mystery and suspense.

17. The Fablemans (Drama, Semi-Autobiographical)

Steven Spielberg’s love letter to filmmaking and family. It’s nostalgic, heartfelt, and a must-watch for anyone who loves cinema as an art form. I love all of the details that nod to some of Spielberg's later work. Perfect for a reflective, inspiring night.

18. Call Me By Your Name (Romantic Drama)

A breathtaking story of first love set in the Italian countryside. When I think of summer I think of Call Me By Your Name. When I think of love I think of Call Me By Your Name. When I think of Timothee Chalamet I think of Call Me By Your Name. With gorgeous visuals and a tender narrative, it’s ideal for a deeply romantic, immersive experience.

19. The House (Animated Anthology, Horror, Comedy)

Dark and visually inventive, this stop-motion anthology is unlike anything else. If you and your partner enjoy offbeat stories and spooky vibes, this one is a unique pick. It's great for fans of Coraline or Tim Burton films.
